Working with a grand classical revival style home at the foot of Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, along with the owners who raised their children in the home, we took the opportunity of the maturation of the family to rethink how the house is used. Given the 6 levels, the best light and views being on the top, we relocated the daily living spaces to the upper levels, and transformed the lower levels to entertainment spaces, with bedrooms in the middle. Inserting a high-speed elevator allows getting from the basement level parking to the expansive and sun filled skylit kitchen and living spaces, with 2 roof terrace levels off them. By gradually transitioning the interior style from the classical to the minimal modernist, with the connective tissue of metal and wood, the design brightens as does the light with elevation, making a great foil for the extensive artwork of the owners. Our scope included the interior design and decorating with our sister firm, Beauchemin-Grassi Interiors.
